The way I set this problem up is to tell students that I am willing to do this prank to another teacher as long as it will cost less than $50 (and it will almost always be more than that). I talk to them about the consequences of going to buy $50 worth and running out. I either have to go over budget or the prank will not look nearly as awesome as the one in the picture. We need to get a reasonably good estimate so we can make a decision.
